ENFORCEMENT TOOLS

The work is not over when your campaign succeeds in creating a new local ordinance or convincing an institution to adopt a new policy. Regulation and ordinances designed to reduce tobacco use aren’t effective unless they’re monitored and enforced. This page provides some of the tools you need to ensure compliance, evaluate effectiveness, and prevent complacency. From proper signage to compliance checks, we can help you ensure that successful advocacy leads to meaningful change.

Rhode Island Tobacco Enforcement Information
Tobacco laws and regulations are only effective if they’re being enforced. While many retailers comply with the laws they are bound to, unfortunately, many others do not. Some retailers disregard age restrictions and other laws governing tobacco sales when they think no one is looking.  The best course of action is having the information you need to enforce and support the tobacco laws. TFRI provides some of the tools you’ll need to hold retailers accountable in your communities, as well as resources for retailers trying to stay within the laws, including a reference guide to Rhode Island laws and penalties, important documents for conducting compliance checks on local retailers, and local enforcement data from 2000-2015.
